Sunday Synopsis #20: Living Up to My Name

Linking up to The Sunday Post hosted by Kim at the Caffeinated Book Reviewer – a weekly meme where fellow book lovers post updates on life, blog happenings, and their recent book hauls.

Well folks, not too much excitement this past week except for a happenin’ work trip to Ohio. Fun Fact:  The origin of “Mallory” has French roots translating to the Ill Omened or Unlucky One.  You see where this is going…

First, let it be known that I should not operate motor vehicles before 5am.  I backed out of my garage headed for the airport and clipped my side mirror on the garage frame.  Typically not a big issue, but the mirror was frozen and the plastic casing shattered instead of flipping-back against the car like it was supposed too.  Then I said the famous last words “Well, at least I got my bad luck out of the way!”  Oh Mallory… you know better!

I had the 7:00 am flight from Minneapolis – on an airplane full of SuperBowl fans who hadn’t quite sobered up yet.  After a long day of meetings, I ran to my hotel for a nap before a work dinner.  I go to check-in and discover my work credit card was shut down due to fraudulent activity.  Work insisted on “overnighting” a new card to my hotel and promised it should arrive in 2-3 days, hopefully before got on the plane for Minneapolis (huh?).

Feeling defeated, I finally get into my non-smoking hotel room to find that the previous occupant had been, well, smoking.  The housekeeper was kind enough to drop-off an air freshener, but not kind enough to put me in a new room.  Lots of complaints to management latter… and I was still stuck in the same room.  No nap for me, but at least they cleaned the room while I was out for dinner.  (And then knock on my door at 11:00pm wondering if they forgot cleaning supplies in my room)

I wish I could say the week got better, but let’s just say I deserved to treat myself today to (another!) wild Saturday at Barnes & Noble and some Olympic Ice Skating.  Pardon any perceived negativity, but I just can’t believe so much crazy could happen in one week! *Note:  I’d make a comment like “at least I got all the bad luck out of the way”…. But we saw what happened last time 🙂

Lately on the Blog:

On Tuesday:  I shared six reasons why books disappear into my TBR, never to be seen again

On Wednesday:  I reviewed Christina Lauren’s Roomies (4.5/5)

On Thursday: I tackled a Sci-Fi book as part my 2018 “Read More of XYZ Types of Books” challenges… check out my thoughts on Illuminae!

Read this Week:

I tackled Max Monroe’s newest romantic comedy – Wildcat.  This newest series centers on the fictional NFL team, the New York Mavericks.  Highly recommend for anyone going through football withdrawals now that the season is finally over.

New to the Bookish Library:

Looks like my YA Sci-Fi/Fantasy kick is still in full force… plus a few non-YA books that had long been on my TBR pile that I grabbed on sale.

Haha! It really was a wild and crazy week. Two days later and I’m still watching Olympic Ice Skating though… does this ever end? 🙂

  1. Nothing good happens at 5 am! Sorry to hear about your mirror though- and the trip snafus. Must have been so frustrating! Glad you made it to the book store though and got some ice skating in. I love watching the Olympics…

Caraval is on my tBR and I LOVED Gemina. Hope you do too!!

Okay… so I’m 200 pages into Gemina and afraid I’m not going to love it. I’m so nervous!!! I need to put down the Olympics for a night and just spend 1-2 hours seeing if I can get into that it 🙂 Wish me luck!

I’m so sorry to hear you had a bad week but chin up! I too would have drowned all sorrows in a shopping spree at the bookstore! It’s a win!

The week was so bad it was actually funny 🙂 At least I can laugh about it! Hope you’re off to a great week, Cai and happy reading!

I still want to say something like “at least I got all the bad luck out of the way,” but I know better! It’s Tuesday and a 50/50 chance that the luck is starting to turn around… too early to tell yet!

  3. Sorry your week was awful but it made me giggle, sorry. Some days (or many days) are like ‘nothing can go right’. If it can make you feel better, I fell on down my ass right in my livign room and the guests (yes they were right here when that happened) had a great laugh before they would come to pull me up.

Thankfully nothing in my body broke 😛 I dunno why I thought that might cheer you up.

I’m glad you laughed!! One of my favorite sayings is “if we didn’t laugh we’d all go insane” 🙂 I enjoyed your story about falling down… not because you fell down, but it sounds like really happy and fun night with friends – especially because you’re okay 🙂 Love nights like those!

  4. I’m also from the Twin Cities and had to deal with all those Super Bowl fans. Quite the mess. But it wasn’t really as bad as I expected. Glad you had an uneventful week and sorry about your bad luck!

We just hid in our house the entire weekend 🙂 We did go downtown the weekend before and had a blast, plus the weather was nice! Superbowl Sunday was a pain though because we live near the stadium and got put in a helicopter flight path – I hope I never hear that sound again!

You know, it wasn’t a great week but it really did make me laugh. I mean, how much bad stuff can really happen to a person in a day? It was unreal in a really funny way 🙂

I’m about 25% of the way through Gemina and not getting into in 🙁 It has moments that have me totally hooked, and then I lose focus – gotta find some time to really devote to reading it!

I hope all the bad luck is long behind me (knock on wood!) . Hope you’re off to a great week, Anna!

Oh! I totally grabbed The Hot Shot and the Alessandra Torre off you Friday Freebies feature – it’s one of my favorites 🙂 I’m loving all the skating, but don’t remember there being so much of it before! Trying to avoid Olympics burn out… 🙂

  5. What a week. It reminds me a bit of a trip I took where the sink started to have water gushing out of the water flow and flooded the room and they said “do you want to change rooms or will it be ok?” The joys of work travel. Here’s hoping you have a better week x

Haha! It sounds like you experience was waaay too similar to mine. She handed me a bottle of Fabreeze. I wasn’t quite convinced that would do the trick 🙂 Very happy to not be traveling for work nearly as much anymore!

Caravel has had me super intrigued for a while – I grabbed it on super clearance at Barnes & Noble, so we’ll see how it goes!

    • Mallory

Oh!! I like the way you think – one bad day has to be worth waaay more than just one B&N trip! Hey – in the long run, it’s probably healthier than treating myself to Ice Cream every time something goes wrong 🙂

    • Mallory

Thanks, Laura! This week is definitely off to a better start 🙂 Let’s just hope it finished the same way!

    • Mallory

Thanks, Jovita! So far so good this week – always helps when I’m not traveling for work! Hope you’re off to a great week and happy reading!
