Wish me luck! My 2018 Reading Challenges

Posted December 28, 2017 by Mallory in Bookish Things / 11 Comments

The time to stop procrastinating and start committing is now!  I’ve been just a tensy-tiny bit terrified to announce my 2018 Reading Challenges because 1) I barely made my 2017 Goodreads goal and 2) I have commitment issues…. Have you seen all the awesome fun challenges out there for 2018?!?  This was a tough decision!

The Traditional Challenge:  Goodreads

I barely hit my 2017 goal of 100 books, so I’m going to take it a little easier in 2018 with 52 books – that’s just one book a week and totally manageable! I’d rather set overall reading goal low this year so I can focus on 1) battling down my TBR pile and 2) reading a little more variety without the fear of “DNF-ing”.

*Although, now that I think of it I probably need to read ~75 books because I can’t bring myself to review every book I read…Why must I overcomplicate the simplest goal?!?

The Challenge I Really Need:  Beat the Backlist with NovelKnight

I’m joining-up with NovelKnight’s 2018 Beat the Backlist challenge. Beat the Backlist focuses on tackling that backlist of books published before 2018 (hello Kindle full of unread books!).  I love that this challenge divides readers into teams – sounds like a great way to meet fellow bloggers!  My goal is 20 books this year….including finally finishing that pesky Harry Potter series!  I’ve been stuck at Book 5 for about 10 years. Oops!

*Pssst!  I’m a Story Sorcerer for those of you in the “Beat the Backlist” know.  Anyone else out there on the same team?

The Just for Fun Challenge:  The A to Z Reading Challenge with Ginger Mom Reads

I wanted one “just for fun” challenge so am joining-up with fellow Minnesotan Ginger Mom Read’s for the A to Z Reading Challenge. The goal is to read a book for each letter in the alphabet – perfect because it drives my crazy to have “blank” letters in my review archives!  I plan on getting through the entire alphabet. And as an added bonus – I can cover-off every letter but X based on my TBR alone.  (Although this probably speaks less to serendipity and more to the overwhelming number of books on my TBR)

The Blog Challenge: 2018 Discussion Challenge with It Starts at Midnight and Feed Your Fiction Addiction

I’m great at drafting discussion posts but terrible at getting them polished and published. C’est la vie.  I’m joining up with the 2018 Discussion Challenge hosted by It Starts at Midnight and Feed Your Fiction Addiction to see if that can push me across the finish line.  I’m aiming for 12 discussion posts (1 per month!).  Wish me luck on this one…

anyone else have 2018 reading challenges they’re really excited for?  Good luck!

YES!!! Those blank spots drive me a little nutty, although I have the reviews organized by Authors. I may be redoing that page to go by Books to work with the challenge 🙂 I also have the worst time deciding between what book to read next – also hoping AtoZ works as a good tiebreaker for what to jump into next!

  1. Great challenges to participate in here!!!I barely managed my goal of 300 books, so I am thinking of taking a break from challenges this author except for the ones I am hosting. And Goodreads I am thinking of just setting at 1 book, and then just relax with books and not have to stress so much about that challenge.

Love the idea of just setting your Goodreads goal to just one book – way to start the New Year off right 🙂 No idea how you find time to read 300 books – I’m in awe! 🙂

I wanted to be a Dewey Dragon, just because Dragons are super awesome 🙂

I’m tempted to make my own rule that my Backlists must be books I already own. I tried to doing a few “book buying bans” this past year, but I spent just as money on books this year as last year. Sigh.

  2. Good luck with all your challenges!
I am also participating in the Beat The Backlist challenge and 2018 Discussion challenge, among others. I am part of the Novel Knights.

Oh fun! I’ve never done any reading challenges before outside of Goodreads, so super excited to give this one a try 🙂 Good luck with Beat the Backlist – really looking forward to checking some books off my TBR in 2018 🙂

I’ve never done anything like Beat the Backlist before, but it sounds like a great big group of bloggers getting together to try it. I think it’s going to be a great opportunity to meet some new people in 2018 🙂
